Cover photograph

Contributed by Dr. Manmohanjit Singh, Additional Professor, Neurosurgery, AIIMS, New Delhi, India.

This picture is from the "Gurez and Telail Valley." This lies in North Kashmir along the line of control (LOC). It is situated around 140 km away from Srinagar. To reach the valley, the Razdan Pass (11,300 feet) has to be crossed. The main city of the valley is Dawar. This valley is cut off from the rest of the country for 6 months from November to April due to heavy snowfall and glaciers over the Razdan Pass. The village in the backdrop is Jurniyal along the river Kishan Ganga (also known as the Neelam river). This is a small hamlet just a kilometer away from the LOC. The picture was taken in the evening in the month of October when the autumn was in full swing and the grasslands were turning brown. A yak is grazing in the foreground adding life to the picture. To visit this valley, permission has to be taken from the district magistrate at Bandipur and from the Indian Army due to its close proximity to the LOC. The inhabitants of this valley are from "Dard" community and speak "Sheena language" which is different from Kashmiri language. The people here are farmers and sustain on their own produce. They are very warm and hospitable. This picture was taken with full frame Canon 6D and EF24-105 mm f4L IS USM lens. The exif data of the picture are 60 mm, f/13, 1/80 sec, ISO 200. Hoya circular polarizer was used to take the picture.
