This picture has been contributed by Dr Avinash Haridas, Consultant Neurosurgeon, KVM Hospital, Cherthala, Alappuzha district, Kerala.

Backwaters of Alappuzha (Venice of the East) are a chain of large lakes and lagoons linked together by canals and are fed by 38 rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats. They lie parallel to the Arabian sea coast of Kerala in South India.

Kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) ply the backwaters and they, along with the beautiful resorts that line the banks of the waterways, make Kerala one of the world's most treasured destinations that every traveler should visit in a lifetime.

Kerala was listed in “50 Places of a Lifetime” by the National Geographic Traveler magazine special collectors' issue.

This image shows Kettuvallams (Kerala Houseboats) plying the backwaters of Vembanad lake in Alappuzha. The Vembanad lake is fed by 10 rivers and is the longest lake (96.5km) in India, the largest lake of Kerala and has the largest wetlands system (2033 km2) in India.
