The communication from Banavathu et al., “A rare case of adult tapeworm in the brain” published in Neurology India (2016;64:576-7) made an interesting read. The authors state that “the presence of adult Taenia solium worm in the brain has not been previously reported. This is the first report of an adult tapeworm in the brain.” In 1983, Kalyanaraman et al., had reported the presence of a calcified worm in the brain.[1] A young male had presented with focal seizures. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain had revealed a 5 cm contrast enhancing hemispherical lesion with perilesional edema. The radiological and operative diagnosis had been a tuberculoma. However, histopathology revealed a calcified adult Taenia solium with scolex. The adjacent tissue had shown fibrous connective tissue cyst wall lined by mixed inflammatory infiltrate with lymphocytes, polymorphs, and histiocytes. Unfortunately, neither the reprint of the publication nor the CT images or the histology slides could now be retrieved for redocumentation.
