Dr Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa is one of the most distinguished neurosurgeons in the world, renowned not only for his surgical skills but for his humane and empathic behaviour. “Becoming Dr. Q” is an autobiography of this great surgeon depicting his journey from a migrant farm worker to one of the most distinguished surgeons in the contemporary world. The book starts with a prologue entitled Seeking Terra Firma that describes the anxiety of a young aspiring neurosurgeon in dealing with the very first emergency case in a busy neurosurgery clinic. Despite a doubt for his own capabilities in his mind, the author mustered the courage to lead the surgical team; courage, which is imbibed in his character after years of untiring efforts to become a neurosurgeon. He aptly writes, “Yes, as I regularly tell my students, there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance! When walking that line in the OR, it's also important to place my feet on solid ground, firm in the knowledge that I can't control everything, and in the reality that I am only human.”

The book is sectioned in three parts namely “Stargazing, Harvesting, and Becoming Dr Q”. Stargazing is like going back to the memory lanes for Dr Alfredo. He candidly remembers his childhood, his bond with this grandfather, and his early days of education. He talks about Freddy, the young Alfredo, who survived a narrow escape while illegally migrating from US-Mexico border and who worked as a farm labour in central California and had some terrifying experiences. “Harvesting” and “Becoming Dr. Q” narrate the metamorphosis of a labourer into a talented and one of the most gifted hands of this era. This biography of Dr Alfredo is a memorable piece of literature, testifying the importance of persistence and perseverance, family values, mentorship in surgical education, and the pursuit of excellence.
