This photograph has been contributed by Dr. Khongbantabam Vyas, Associate Professor (Neurosurgery), Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, Manipur.

In Wangkhei Meihoubam, a place situated 4 km from Imphal City, Manipur, a 50-year old public furnace is built over a never-ending source of underground gas found by chance. Discovered in the late 60s while drilling for water, it is continuously emitting gas since the time it was detected. The local clubs have built a public furnace over this source of underground gas. The place is used as a prayer site and also as a fire place and is controlled by the local club. No odour of any inflammable gas is detectable in the room and there is no need to put off the fire manually. The camera settings for the photograph include an aperture setting of 5.6, focal length 24mm, exposure time 1/90 sec, manual exposure.
