Sunday mornings at the Lalbagh Botanical gardens have become a ritual for me and my family in recent times. The beauty and serenity cannot be described in words. These gardens are home to some extraordinary birds. One such bird is the 'Spot-billed' or 'Grey' pelican, a relatively large bird, found predominantly in Peninsular India, roosting on tree tops near large lakes. This bird is difficult to differentiate from other pelicans in the region, but at close range, the spots on the upper mandible (from where it gets its name), the lack of bright colours and the 'grey' plumage are distinctive. I have tried to capture this bird on its perch (trees on an island in the middle of the Lalbagh lake) unsuccessfully for many months now. Recently, I was following it while it was swimming in the lake, and alas, it took flight. Capturing a bird in flight is a special moment as ardent photographers would know. In addition to keeping the camera on 'Shutter priority mode', it is important to keep our focus on the bird's eye and keep panning the camera at the same speed as the bird is flying by. Multiple shots were taken, but amongst them, getting this shot, with the defining features of the 'Spot-billed' or 'Grey' pelican on full display, was indeed special.
