Dear Editor,

We read a review article titled “Science and Art of Reviewing Papers to Maintain Standards in Academia” in a recent edition of your journal.[1] The article discussed the process of peer review, the role of a reviewer in improving the scientific value of a research paper, and how authors should reply to reviewers' comments. Another interesting editorial in the same issue titled “Authors, Reviewers, and Publishers - The Ecosystem for Scientific Documentation: Is this Enough?” discussed the role of a reviewer in augmenting the scientific quality of a manuscript and how to enhance the pool of dynamic reviewers of a journal.[2] These two articles would surely inform the readers about the importance of peer review in strengthening scientific publications. Ganapathy concluded that a refresher course on peer review would be included as a continuing medical education (CME) program in the annual conference of the Neurological Society of India. However, many of the budding researchers may miss the limited-capacity CME. This letter is written for those who would like to learn the basics of peer review from available online sources.

There are both paid and free courses online for learning the art of peer review. The majority of the courses are free. Any interested user can access the courses. The self-paced courses and guidelines are available on public domains. We are listing some of the courses in [Table 1] for budding researchers.[3] We presume that the list, although not a comprehensive one, would provide a cafeteria choice for the learners.

The peer review may be open (where authors and reviewers' identities are disclosed), single-blind (where reviewers know authors' identity), and double-blind (where identity of authors and reviewers are not disclosed). The majority of the journals follow double-blinding. However, many journals are now using an open model and publishing the review report with the published article. Hence, proofreading the review report is a good choice. As non-native speakers, we have limitations in expressing ourselves and may make grammatical errors. We suggest using any free grammar-checking software before posting the review report. A quick guide is available in our article published elsewhere.[4]
